What are NVQs? National Vocational Qualifications are work-based nationally recognised qualifications, designed to benchmark the skills an employee needs to do their job effectively. They offer candidates a qualification in the workplace that relates to their job, and promote good working practice. There is no strict time limit for doing an NVQ, though on average an NVQ 2 takes around six months to complete, an NVQ 3 around nine months. A commitment of around 2 hours a week is required.
NVQs combine two aspects of learning:
Underpinning knowledge - the things an employee needs to know in order to their job effectively
Assessment - an employee demonstrating, via their job, that they can apply this knowledge to their role. Continuous assessment will be covered by portfolio building, collection of evidence of carrying out the required tasks detailed in the NVQ, eg. copies of records and witness testimonies
